We meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at
  • 7-8pm     Kempo Foundations
  • 8-9pm     Intermediate Kempo
in the Harrow School Dojo in Harrow on the Hill.

KEMPO FOUNDATIONS

Building Your Core Skills

Kempo Foundations is designed for beginners and lower grades.

The focus is on developing a strong base of practical skills and understanding through regular, structured practice.

Students learn:
  • Safe falling and recovery techniques
  • Positioning and movement for self-defence
  • Footwork and balance
  • Open-hand strikes and kicking techniques
  • Escapes from grabs, holds, and chokes
  • Basic throws and joint locks
  • Awareness and personal safety principles.

INTERMEDIATE KEMPO

Developing Technical Understanding

Once students have achieved Yellow Belt, they may attend Intermediate Kempo.  Training builds upon the foundations already developed and introduces more complex concepts and applications.

Topics include:
  • Advanced combinations and counter-attacks
  • In-fighting and close-range tactics
  • Defence against common weapons
  • More demanding self-defence scenarios
  • Advanced throws and joint locking techniques
  • Pressure drills and controlled sparring

The emphasis remains on understanding principles, not simply collecting techniques.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL CLASS LOOK LIKE?

A typical session may include:

Technical Development
Students practise individual skills and techniques with attention to detail and correct body mechanics.

Partner Training
Techniques are developed through structured partner exercises designed to improve timing, distance, control, and application.

Self-Defence Drills
Students learn to apply techniques in realistic situations while developing awareness, reactions, and composure.

Sparring
Controlled sparring helps students develop timing, movement, resilience, and decision-making under pressure.

PROGRESSION

Kempo uses a visible ranking system to recognise progress and achievement.
  • White Belt – Beginner
  • Yellow Belt – Novice
  • Green Belt – Intermediate
  • Brown Belt – Advanced
  • Black Belt – Advanced technical understanding and proficiency

Students are assessed continuously during training and promoted when they consistently demonstrate the required standard.

We never charge for gradings or certificates.
